Port Heiden Environmental Office
Port Heiden's Environmental Office oversees many programs in Port Heiden.
Some of these programs include:
IGAP: IGAP stands for Indian General Assistance Program.
Funding is provided under GAP for the purposes of planning, developing, and establishing tribal environmental protection programs consistent with programs and authorities administered by the EPA. This Guidance recognizes that there is a broad spectrum among tribes with respect to population, culture, income, geography, economic development, and environmental program management expertise and training. GAP assistance may be tailored to the needs of each tribe, and regions are responsible for working with tribes to establish assistance agreement work plans that are a proper fit.
IGAP Borough Backhaul: IGAP Borough Backhaul is a collaboration between the sixteen communities that make up the Lake and Peninsula Borough. This program sends barges out to the village and picks up any scrap metal they might have as well as Hazardous waste.
Brownfields: Is a Grant given to communities to help assess any site that may pose a public health and safety concern that can be eligible for clean up to land that has been contaminated or might be contaminated.
LEO: Local Environmental Observer (LEO) Network
With the growing importance of environment and climate change as public health challenges, it is important that communities have the capacity to monitor, respond, and adapt to new impacts and health effects. Developing effective systems for accessing locally relevant information is part of the challenge. The Local Environmental Observer (LEO) Network provides a model for engaging communities and connecting with technical experts and resources. It also informs about specific events and the impacts, needs, and responses.
